Distinguishing the quality of an affordable online college degree

Distinguishing the quality of an affordable online college degree

Since 1800, when distance learning programs boomed into the education system, studying online was developed by many universities worldwide. In the U.S., the growth of online education has exceeded 2.6 million during the 2004 school year.

With this growth of enrollees for online education, many colleges, universities and private institutions is now providing web-based courses. How will you know which one to choose?

Here are some of the things you should consider in finding the perfect and affordable college for your online learning:

1) Cost. Although the main purpose of pursuing your college degree through online education is comfort, you should also consider the cost of your learning.

* Basically, online courses are more affordable than traditional learning. With the addition of saving your transportation fees and pocket money, all you have to do is search for the best college that would suit your needs.

* There are approximately half a million colleges, universities and private institutions that provide online education for all kinds of degrees. You could request for financial information on the field of study you want to enroll in. Compare which program is best for your finances.

* The cost of your education would depend on the course to be studied, the quality of learning the university has to offer and the schedule of your classes – whether it would be taken up for a period of 2, 4, or 5 years or the vocational courses would only take two months.

2) Benefits. Aside from choosing an affordable online education program, you should consider all the advantages and disadvantages of each college.

* Field of study. Although majority of universities provide you with training for business, law, medicinal courses, art, vocational courses and many more, you should always remember to check the specifications of each college. Ask for a description of the curriculum for your online education to ensure the course you desire would be tackled in the lesson plan.

* Schedule. Since online college degree programs are made for the student’s convenience, be sure to check the time of your classes. Most people enrolled in web-based training have full-time employments. By ensuring the flexibility of the college’s online program, you wouldn’t have to worry about possible clashing of work and school’s schedule.

* Personal preference. There are two kinds of online education – visual and audio. Know which kind of learning you would prefer and be sure that the university you apply for offers this kind of program. Always ask the availability of the instructor for future questions regarding your course.

3) Quality of the institution is still important even if you’re pursuing a distance education.

* The main thing you should know about the school’s quality is accreditation.

* An accredited school has been checked by either the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or other government and private accreditation departments.

* There are four basic purpose of accreditation: a) It evaluates the standards and quality of education b) It persuades the institutions to improve the quality of online education c) It ensures the liability of each accredited institution and d) it provides the public with confidence in the accredited educational institution.

* If you have finished your degree in an accredited institution, this would be an advantage when you look for a job. Most employers check for proof if an applicant has completed their academic program in an accredited school.

* There are six regional accreditation boards available for all the geographic regions of the US. These are: a) WASC - Western Association of Schools and Colleges, b) SACS – Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, c) NCA – North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, d) NASC – Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, e) MSA – Middle States Association and f) NEASC – New England Association for Schools and Colleges.

* Specializing in distance learning is DETC or Distance Education & Training Council and ACICS or The Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges & Schools. These are the two institutions that accredit online-based educational programs.

* If you are not sure of the quality of you desired school, it is advisable to check with the accreditation organizations listed above.

Checking for the affordability of your online education shouldn’t be the only basis for enrolling and pursuing your college degree. Evaluate the quality of education while ensuring the tuition fee is affordable. Learn cheaply and with high-class education excellence.
